The track and field stadium at IUPUI was a sea of colors today as thousands of people showed up to walk in the 10th annual Indiana Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation "Walk to Cure Diabetes." More than 3,000 people dressed in colorful team T-shirts gathered at the IU Michael Carroll Track and Soccer Stadium before taking to nearby streets for the two-mile walk or four-mile run. Organizers hoped to raise $750,000 from the event, up from the $680,000 last year. The Indiana Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation estimates there are between 5,000 to 10,000 people with juvenile or Type 1 diabetes in Indiana. Nationally, an estimated 3 million people are afflicted with the disease. Among today's participants was Anna Timke, 8, of Indianapolis, who had gotten 30 people to support her effort, including 10 from her third-grade class at Forest Glenn Elementary School in Lawrence Township. |
